Local Food for Kids

Healthy eating habits introduced in early childhood are more likely to last. Kids who eat fresh fruits and vegetables, high-quality meat and dairy products, and a variety of grains and legumes are more likely to maintain these good habits as adults. Our work is grounded in the belief that local food for kids – access to high-quality, nutritious, locally grown food– is the foundation of better health and community vitality.

We are not only committed to improving access to locally produced food for youth in our community, but also to enhancing their food and eco-literacy. Our programs allow school-aged children in Blaine County to experience the power of planting seeds, harvesting the bounty, and seeing the nutrients in their leftovers composted into rich, organic matter.

We support multiple efforts to assess and improve access to local food for kids in school cafeteria offerings throughout our county. We have applied for a federal grant for a farm-to-school food program implementation plan for Blaine County School District (BCSD). Whether or not we receive these funds, we are committed to integrating farm-to-school practices wherever possible. In partnership with BCSD, we plan to launch additional composting programs at Hemingway STEAM and Wood River High School. An expansive school garden and greenhouse facility are also being discussed.

Please consider donating your time, talent, or treasure to our local food for kids programs. You can help shape the future of our community!
