We are so excited that a winter farmers market has started in Hailey. This past Saturday was the second market at the Grange Hall. Over a dozen vendors were there, selling everything from fresh produce and locally raised meats to snacks and sweet treats. Turnout has been fantastic, and the vendors are reporting solid sales. Thank you to the Wood River Farmers Market Association board and staff for taking a chance on this addition to our local food landscape.
Winter Farmers Markets Sustain Local Food Systems
Winter farmers markets are important in sustaining local food systems and supporting farmers and consumers throughout the cold months. The Hailey market provides a venue for farmers and producers to continue selling their products directly to consumers year-round. By consistently bringing together vendors in one place, the market helps to maintain a direct connection between producers and consumers.
The Resilience of Winter Markets
Staying committed to supporting local farmers through the winter months also bolsters the resilience of our community’s food supply chain and reduces our reliance on distant suppliers. Our winter market also helps reduce the miles our food travels, cutting down on the environmental impact of long-distance transportation.
Maintaining Community
Beyond the practical benefits of the new winter farmers market, it also fosters a sense of community by bringing people together in shared spaces to celebrate local agriculture and the hardworking people who supply our food. It provides opportunities for education and engagement around local food and strengthens the bonds between producers and consumers.
We are so excited to connect with our regional farmers and other local food advocates during the winter months. The Winter Farmers Market is an invaluable asset to our community. We urge you to shop at the winter market each Saturday through the end of March. With enough support, the winter market will become a permanent part of our local foodshed.
